The other holds humanoids and robotaxis that the companies building them openly describe as hard to scale. For shoppers, the first lane is where the practical decisions are.
What you can actually buy
Vacuums remain the most mature category in consumer robotics. That project is not a product you can order, but it flags a real risk. Some manufacturers gate mapping, scheduling or no-go zones behind paid tiers or a connected account. On the smart-home side, Amazon is updating Alexa Plus, currently in preview, to connect with smart home devices in new ways, including technology from Bosch. Honor and Arri plan to show a "Robot Phone" next week, alongside a new Honor logo, according to GSMArena. Nothing is known about specifications, price or availability. It is a reveal, not a release. File it under curiosity until there is hardware to assess.
What's still a watch list
General-purpose humanoids generated the most attention and the least buyable product. Tesla's Elon Musk told investors that Optimus will be the hardest product the company has ever scaled, warning that the humanoid has no existing supply chain. That is a candid admission from the company itself, and it should temper any expectation of a consumer humanoid at a normal price this year.
Tesla's robotaxi program drew similar scrutiny. The Verge described the effort as clashing with reality despite the company's positive framing on its earnings call. As with humanoids, the gap between demonstration and dependable, scaled service remains the central question.
Funding continues regardless. Holiday Robotics raised $105 million for FRIDAY, a wheeled humanoid with a mobile base, a dexterous upper body and hot-swappable batteries, per The Robot Report. The design choices are pragmatic: wheels are easier than legs, and swappable batteries address uptime. But this is enterprise and development hardware, not a home appliance.
The supporting layer is maturing too. AMD unveiled its Ryzen AI Embedded X100 and Kria AI SoM for real-time control and unified memory in robots, positioning against NVIDIA. Better silicon and more competition among suppliers are prerequisites for cheaper, more capable robots later. They are not, by themselves, a reason to buy anything now.
How to read the split
The practical takeaway is straightforward. If you are spending money in 2026, the defensible purchases are cleaning and smart-home devices, judged on hardware and on what they still do after the novelty fades. Humanoids and robotaxis are worth following, but the companies leading them are the ones flagging the difficulty of scaling. That is a signal to watch, not to pre-order.
