The wire is (mostly) gone
The old model meant burying a boundary wire around your entire lawn and every flowerbed — a weekend of work and a permanent failure point. When it's genuinely worth it

- Slopes and odd shapes: the better models handle inclines and complex layouts that make manual mowing a chore.
When to skip it
- Small, simple lawns: a corded or battery push mower is cheaper and barely any effort.
- Heavily divided gardens with steps between zones the robot can't traverse.
- You mow rarely and don't mind it — the robot's value is in frequency.
The three specs that matter
1. Boundary system. Wire-free (RTK/vision) is worth paying for. Check it has a fallback for GPS-shaded corners under trees.
2. Slope rating. Quoted in percent; match it honestly to your steepest section or the robot will strand itself.
3. Coverage per charge. Make sure the rated area comfortably exceeds your lawn so it finishes in one cycle.
